2023 Grantee: John Miller

In October of 2022, John Miller was in Vermont securing lumber for his woodworking projects back home in Wakefield, MA. John was taking down a large cherry tree when part of the tree came down and rolled on his body. He was brought to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for a broken femur, collapsed lung, many broken ribs, and other trauma. In surgery, some complications led to an incomplete spinal cord injury and paralysis from the shoulders down.
Since being transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown, John has been making progress in his daily living. JTF stepped in and approved a grant for a ceiling-mounted lift to assist with transfers. John has a great support system and is seeing improvements every day!
Quality of Life Grants
In the spring of 2022, we opened our QOL grants program to individuals throughout New England who have suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury. These grants are essential in preparing for life outside of a hospital setting, and we look to aid in the recovery of an individual now faced with many mobility challenges. Many pieces of equipment are not covered by insurance, and many go without necessities because of the inability to pay for them. We hope to play a small part in getting people back to normal daily living while creating independent solutions for many people who need them. Please see our grant application below.
At this time we are not reviewing new applications until October, 2023
